How do I become a real estate agent?

There are a few steps to becoming a real estate agent in Ohio.

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • Have a High School diploma.
  • Complete 120 hours of real estate education from an approved institution.
    • Topics include Real Estate Principles and Practices, Ohio Real Estate Law, Real Estate Appraisal, and Real Estate Finance.
  • Partner with a Broker who will agree to supervise and train you.
  • Submit a Salesperson License Examination Application to the Division of Real Estate Professional Licensing.
    • The application fee is $81
  • Pass a background check for both State and Federal records.
  • Schedule your Real Estate license test. There are two parts to the exam – a national and a state-specific section. You’ll have 200 total minutes to complete the national (120 minutes) and the state-specific (60 minutes) sections.
    • You must pass the quiz with a 70% or higher.

What do I do after passing my Real Estate License exam?

Start working! After obtaining your real estate license, you’ll want to start working your network for new leads. Often, this could be friends or family members looking to sell or purchase a new home. Even if it’s a family member, treat them like a client. This practice will help you fully understand the selling and buying process and give your family member a great experience. The greater their experience, the more likely they will refer you to your friends.

How do I grow my real estate business?

That is a great question! You can do many things to help grow your Real Estate business. A few initial activities I’d suggest are:

  • Create a schedule: This will help you establish a routine of reaching out to cold leads, networking for referrals, and providing ample time for you to learn about the Real Estate industry and the city you are selling in.
  • Write down your goal: What is your goal for the first year of your license? It doesn’t have to be around selling or buying houses – your goal could be around the number of cold calls, showings, referrals, or anything that is designed to be obtainable. Setting a realistic goal will help you stay motivated, feel successful, and propel you forward in your career.
  • Be consistent: Consistency is the key in real estate. You must be willing to consistently work on and in your business. Real estate takes a lot of hard work, but a consistent approach to cold calling, following up, networking, and asking for referrals will help you find new leads.
  • Find a coach: Working with a mentor will ensure you are on the right path to success. A coach can help you set goals, guide you through the early years of your career, share about the contract process, and provide valuable advice on building your business. If you are looking for a knowledgeable coach, I’d welcome the opportunity to connect! I’ve been in the industry since 2011, and I’ve helped agents implement beneficial systems to grow their sales.
